Vervolg:

(Voorlopig) laatste deel in de reeks over de Australische “Aborigines”.

Wij, de Europese kolonisatoren, waren ervan overtuigd dat de inheemse volkeren, in Afrika, in Amerika, in Australië, nauwelijks “menselijk” waren, omdat ze “niet beschaafd” waren en “geen cultuur” hadden. De Europese veroveraars waren fout. Uiteraard.

Ik weet niet of je ooit al gehoord had over “Australische Hiphop” of “Australische Rap”? Ik eerlijk gezegd ook niet. Ik heb dit bij toeval ontdekt na het luisteren naar “Took the Children away” van Archie Roach: een song van Mau Power en Archie Roach. Mau Power is een Aborigine hiphop-artiest en film- en platenproducer, die actief opkwam voor de rechten van de Australische aboriginals.

Deze song, “Freedom”, wordt soms beschouwd als het “volkslied” van de inheemse bevolking van de Torres Straat Eilanden (tussen Australië en Papua-Nieuw-Guinea). Het is een aanklacht tegen racisme en onderdrukking, maar tegelijk ook een ode aan vrijheid en harmonieus samenleven.

Het idee achter die song is dat de inheemse volkeren van Australië, in dit geval van de eilanden aan de Torres Straat, er alleen in geslaagd zijn als volk te overleven door hun cultuur te koesteren:

“Let it be written in the mazes: survival of a culture is the reason that we made it.”

De inheemse bevolking van de Torres Straat Eilanden vormen een heel kleine groep, anders dan de rest van de inheemse Australiërs. Ze hebben het dan ook erg moeilijk om als apart volk te overleven:

“We have survived, written in our time, carrying our pride, raise your flags high.  

We have survived, keepers of our times, carrying our pride, singing out freedom”

Tegen de gangbare “beschavingsdrang” in, hebben zij de vrijheid opgeëist om hun cultuur te blijven beleven. Wat trouwens ook in de videoclip sterk aan bod komt.
