7 O'Clock News

Vervolg: We hebben allemaal schuld aan de oorlog.

Het lijkt op het eerste zicht, of op het eerste gehoor, gewoon een zeemzoet Kerstliedje, maar “7 O’Clock News” van Simon & Garfunkel uit 1966 is een heel krachtige protestsong. Tussen de tonen van “Silent Night” door wordt het nieuws, het Zeven Uur Journaal, voorgelezen, en dat is allesbehalve vredig te noemen:

Het nieuws in dat journaal is verre van vredelievend, ondanks de veronderstelde “kerststemming”. Het  gaat over een oeverloos debat in het Huis van Afgevaardigden: over betere kansen op huisvesting voor arme mensen en kleurlingen. Een debat dat alleen een pijnlijk compromis heeft opgeleverd waar niemand iets aan had. Het gaat over het overlijden van de controversiële “stand-up comedian” Lenny Bruce die wat té veel tegen de schenen van het establishment had gestampt. Het gaat over een seriemoordenaar die negen vrouwen had vermoord vooraleer hij gestopt werd. Het gaat over een politieke poging van hogerhand om Martin Luther King te beletten een vreedzame mars te houden omtrent de huisvestingsproblematiek. En het gaat vooral over de vijandige houding van de overheid tegenover protesten tegen de Vietnamoorlog. De slotzin van het journaal is trouwens typisch voor het Amerika van toen (en eigenlijk ook voor het Amerika van nu):

“Nixon also said opposition to the war in this country is the greatest single weapon working against the U.S.”

Die verheerlijking van de oorlog, en de dwang vanuit de overheid en de officiële media om een oorlog te steunen, of in elk geval niet af te keuren, is één van de oorzaken waarom oorlogen maar blijven uitbreken en blijven aanslepen. Ook al weet iedereen diep in zijn/haar hart hoe zinloos en wreed een oorlog, élke oorlog, wel is. En zoals ook Buffy Sainte-Marie ons onder de neus wreef: wij zijn allemaal mee verantwoordelijk. Al was het maar omdat wij die leiders verkozen hebben die persee ten oorlog willen trekken…

The recent fight in the House of Representatives was over the open housing
section of the Civil Rights Bill.
Brought traditional enemies together but it left the defenders of the
measure without the votes of their strongest supporters.
President Johnson originally proposed an outright ban covering discrimination
by everyone for every type of housing but it had no chance from the start
and everyone in Congress knew it.
A compromise was painfully worked out in the House Judiciary Committee.
In Los Angeles today comedian Lenny Bruce died of what was believed to be an
overdoes of narcotics.
Bruce was 42 years old.
Dr. Martin Luther King says he does not intend to cancel plans for an open
housing march Sunday into the Chicago suburb of Cicero.
Cook County Sheriff Richard Ogleby asked King to call off the march and the
police in Cicero said they would ask the National Guard to be called out
if it is held.
King, now in Atlanta, Georgia, plans to return to Chicago Tuesday.
In Chicago Richard Speck, accused murderer of nine student nurses, was brought
before a grand jury today for indictment.
The nurses were found stabbed an strangled in their Chicago apartment.
In Washington the atmosphere was tense today as a special subcommittee of the
House Committee on Un-American activities continued its probe into anti-
Vietnam war protests.
Demonstrators were forcibly evicted from the hearings when they began chanting
anti-war slogans.
Former Vice-President Richard Nixon says that unless there is a substantial
increase in the present war effort in Vietnam, the U.S. should look forward
to five more years of war.
In a speech before the Convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in New York,
Nixon also said opposition to the war in this country is the greatest single
weapon working against the U.S.
