In the Army now

“In the Army now” is een behoorlijk sarcastische song uit 1986 van de rockband Status Quo. De meeste van hun nummers zijn, zowel tekstueel als muzikaal, erg simplistisch en “rechttoe-rechtaan”, maar deze song uit hun latere periode heeft toch net iets meer “inhoud”.

De song is min of meer opgevat als een (leugenachtige en valse) promotiecampagne voor het leger, en de toon wordt al meteen gezet bij de eerste lijnen: het leger wordt ineens voorgesteld als een ideale luilekkervakantie.

Nothing to do all day but stay in bed.”

En de valse beloftes en mooie vooruitzichten op een heldhaftig bestaan worden ook verder niet gespaard:

“You'll be the hero of the neighbourhood.”

Maar al meteen wordt de illusie doorprikt:

“Nobody knows that you've left for good.”
En de pijnlijke waarheid komt onvermijdelijk tot uiting:

“Smiling faces as you wait to land,
But once you get there no-one gives a damn

Hand grenades flying over your head

Missiles flying over your head

Shots ring out in the dead of night,
The sergeant calls 'Stand up and fight!'”

Het wordt al gauw duidelijk dat dit géén vakantie is en dat de jonge militair niet als een held zal ontvangen worden als hij (ooit, misschien) weer naar huis komt.

Het leidt geen twijfel dat het Amerikaanse leger allerlei mooie voorstellingen heeft gemaakt van wat het betekent om militair te worden, en dat de jonge rekruten een geïdealiseerd beeld voorgeschoteld krijgen van het leger om hen te lokken. Maar de bittere waarheid is dat het geen pretje is en dat jonge mensen sneuvelen zodra het ernst wordt. Er geldt finaal maar één regel in het leger: het gaat om doden of gedood worden.

“You've got your orders better shoot on sight,
Your finger's on the trigger but it don't seem right.”

Ook het Belgisch leger is (wanhopig) op zoek naar nieuwe soldaten, en gebruikt heel erg aanlokkelijke campagnefilmpjes om de jonge mensen te overtuigen. Maar wat ze er niet bij zeggen, is dat het ook bittere ernst kan worden als er een conflict zou uitbreken waarin België betrokken raakt. Er wordt in de promotiefilmpjes zedig over gezwegen, maar de realiteit is dat de kans ook in België bestaat dat je naar oorlogsgebied gestuurd wordt (in NAVO-verband of in het kader van een “vredesmissie”). Als dat gebeurt, dan is er ook de mogelijkheid dat je in een gevecht terechtkomt en dat je iemand zal moeten doodschieten als je niet zelf gedood wil worden. Dat is iets wat je als mens nooit meer te boven komt. Is het dat wat men wil?

Als de machthebbers kandidaten zoeken voor het leger, dat ze dan tenminste het volledige verhaal vertellen en geen zeemzoet sprookje. Wie desondanks toch voor het leger zou kiezen, weet dan tenminste op voorhand waar hij of zij voor gekozen heeft: voor het geweld.
