War

“War”, een song uit 1970 van Edwin Starr, is één van de vele anti-oorlogsliedjes van in de tijd van de Vietnamoorlog, maar het is misschien wel het meest bekende, en in elk geval het meest expliciete.

Veel commentaar en uitleg behoeft deze song dan ook niet; de tekst zegt alles:

“War,
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing”

De media hebben het er dikwijls over dat de oorlog in Oekraïne een “zinloze” oorlog is, omdat er al bij al geen enkele objectieve aanleiding voor Rusland geweest is om de oorlog te starten en het buurland binnen te vallen. Alles draait om de machtshonger van Vladimir Poetin die het grote “Russische Rijk” zou willen herstellen. Maar eerlijk gezegd: is niet elke oorlog “zinloos”? Bestaan er “zinvolle” oorlogen? Nee toch?  “War, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing!”

Vreemd eigenlijk hoe zowat iedereen het daar over eens is: oorlog betekent verwoesting van (onschuldige) levens, verdriet en verlies, een vreselijke prijs die moet betaald worden. Zonder ook maar enige zingeving.

Dit lied dateert al uit 1970, maar het is meer dan vijftig jaar later helaas nog altijd even actueel. Of misschien zelfs actueler dan ooit. Dat zegt jammer genoeg veel over het mensdom. Misschien zouden we allemaal weer meer naar deze song moeten luisteren, misschien zou dit opnieuw meer op de radio te horen moeten zijn. En misschien zouden we dan met z’n allen opnieuw wat meer stilstaan bij de zinloosheid van een oorlog?

Al vrees ik een beetje dat oorlogszuchtige en wraakzuchtige leiders zoals Poetin of Netanyahu hoe dan ook doof zullen blijven voor elke oproep om te stoppen met hun oorlog.
